Helen's Story

Helen H. (Ratcliff) Wittkamper, 78, Elwood, died Dec. 1, 2017. She was born Sept. 28, 1939, in Clinton County, the daughter of Owen and Vera (Teter) Ratcliff of rural Tipton. Helen married Maurice G. Wittkamper Dec. 29, 1957, at the Normanda Christian Church, and they enjoyed 52 years together.
She was a family and consumer science teacher at Elwood Community School Corporation for 15 years. Helen graduated valedictorian from Prairie Township High School in 1957 and later completed a Master of Arts degree from Ball State University in 1984.
She was baptized into the Christian faith on April 13, 1952, at the Normanda Christian Church in Tipton County. She attended Hobbs Christian Church, Frankton Christian Church and East Main Street Christian Church in Elwood. She was affiliated with Homecraft and Red Corner Home demonstration clubs, the Red Corner Volunteer Fire Department Women's Auxiliary and the Elwood Chapter of the American Association of University Women. She was a member of the Elwood Country Club and Indiana Retired Teachers Association. She was a honorary member of Phi Upsilon Omicron Family/Consumer Science, Kappa Delta Pi Education and Golden Key Club. She served as a 4-H leader and two terms on the Madison County 4-H Association. Helen's hobbies and interests have included sewing, tailoring and gourmet cooking. She was an avid reader, enjoyed playing the piano, took pride in maintaining and caring for the farmstead and managing the family farms. She also enjoyed restoring and decorating her 100-year-old farm home.
Helen's family includes two children, Lisa (John) Rinker, Alexandria, and Myron Wittkamper, Alexandria; four grandchildren, Tiffany Rinker (Russell) Van Natta, Anderson, Lance Rinker, Indianapolis, Krysta Wittkamper Kincade, Elwood, and Blake Wittkamper, Alexandria; three great-grandchildren from Krysta; brother, Owen Leon Ratcliff Jr. (Patricia), O'Fallon, Illinois; cousin, Kathryn (Gene) Gielow, Michigan City; special friend, Cynthia A. (Ray) Noble, Tipton; and numerous extended family members.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2017, at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Russ Van Natta officiating. Private burial will be in the Elwood City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2017, at the funeral home. Memorials: Morrisett Center Food Pantry or the Madison Co. 4-H program.
