Donald Joe Etherington, 65, Kokomo, passed away at 1:16 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16, 2018, at St. Vincent Kokomo. He was born Aug. 11, 1952, in Tipton, to Donald and Martha (Watson) Etherington. On July 9, 1977, he married Virginia Thompson in Kokomo, and she survives.
Donald graduated from Taylor High School in 1970 and earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in education at Indiana University Kokomo. He taught school for a total of 38 years, first at Jefferson Elementary School in Tipton as a fourth-grade teacher and then at Tipton Middle School as a sixth-grade social studies and English teacher. He also coached girls basketball at Taylor, basketball and tennis at Hamilton Heights, and basketball and tennis at Tipton. He enjoyed doing yard work, collecting sports memorabilia, watching UConn girls basketball, IU basketball and the Green Bay Packers. He was a member of the Indiana Retired Teachers Association, the National Education Association and First Christian Church of Kokomo.
In addition to his wife, Virginia "Ginny" A. Etherington, he is survived by his sons, Kyle (Courtney) Etherington and Chris (Jenna) Etherington; granddaughter, Emma Etherington; uncles and aunts, Elmer and Pat Watson and Wayne and Shirley Watson; extended family, Rita Buchanan, Michelle Etherington, Natalie Godfrey, Addie Etherington, Brenda Ortega, Steve Acord, Gene Acord, and Roger Acord; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ricky Etherington; and aunts, Dorothy Watson and Fern Watson.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 23, 2018, at Stout & Son Funeral Home, 200 E. Main St., Russiaville. Burial will follow in New London Cemetery.
