Donald "Algie" Algernon Carter, 85, Kokomo, passed away at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2017, at Community Howard Regional Health in Kokomo. He was born June 5, 1932, in Marion, the son of the late Francis Watham & Almeda Vance. On Oct. 20, 1956, he married Gloria Hoosier, who preceded him in death on Jan. 31, 2012.
Donald was a graduate of Marion High School. He served with the United States Army from 1952-1954 earning the rank of Pvt. 2nd Class. Donald retired as a general supervisor from General Motors. He was a member of the Wayman Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church and served as an usher and sang in the men's choir. Donald was an avid golfer and member of the Kokomo Golf Klub. He made a hole-in-one at the age of 79 years old at the American Legion Golf Club. He was a former member of the Eagles and Elks Club. He served as Trustee for the V.F.W. Post #1152.
Donald is survived by his children, Sheryl (Alfred) Bell, Moreno Valley, California, Angela Davis, Kokomo, and Tamara Carter, Kokomo; grandchildren, Ryian (Jessica) Carter, Neil Ellison, Lauren Ellison, Melanie Davis, Maya Bell and Melia Carter; great-grandchildren, Maylia Alexander, Joel Sebihi, Sofia Carter and Avery Carter; aunt, Mae Katherine Browner; and cousin, Thomas (Sandra) Nukes.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, wife, daughter, Candace Ellison, and grandson, Julian Alexander.
A special thanks to David Johnson, Adrianne Brown, Jake Kinney and all that showed Algie love and support.
Services will be Friday, Jan. 5, 2017, 11 a.m. at Wayman Chapel, AME Church, 920 N. Apperson Way, Kokomo, IN, which will include the Military Rites Ceremony by VFW, Post 1152. A Home Going Celebration will be held on Saturday, Jan. 6, at 5 p.m. at the VFW Post #1152, 920 N. Washington, Kokomo, IN. Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory assisted with cremation.
