Darell W. Gillam, 94, New Port Richey, Florida, formerly of Kokomo, left this earth to join the Lord at 5:04 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, 2017, at Trinity Hospital in New Port Richey, Florida. He was born July 20, 1923, in Kokomo, the son of the late Elgie and Lola (Lamb) Gillam. On July 2, 1968, in Joliet, Illinois, he married Virginia "Ginny" (Specht), and she survives.
Darell was a 1941 graduate of Greentown High School. In 1954 he became the second franchisee of the late Colonel Harland Sanders, Kentucky Fried Chicken. Darrell was a member of the Indiana Freemasons, where he served as a past master of the Burlington Lodge 111, a lifetime member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis, and a member of the Shriners Murat Temple. Darell was elected president of the Indiana Restaurant Association and also served on the National Advertising Board and the National Franchise Advisory Committee for KFC. He was commissioned an honorary Kentucky Colonel on March 25, 1966, by Gov. Edward T. Breathitt. On Oct. 5, 1972, Darell had the distinguishable honor of receiving The State of Indiana Council of The Sagamores of The Wabash from Gov. Edgar D. Whitcomb.
Darell is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Ginny Gillam; children, Sandra (Tom) Vega, Teresa (John) Streza, Kirk (Julie) Gillam, Sonny (Wanda) Lewis, and Shari (Todd) Brittain, along with 12 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren; sister, Norma Jean Hargrave, and three nephews.
Darell was preceded in death by his parents, and his son, Doug Gillam.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27, 2017, at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, Kokomo. Burial will follow in Sunset Memory Garden Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
