Alene Elinor (Swingle-Ross-Poe) Wood, 97, Kokomo, passed away Friday, Oct. 20, 2017. She was born Nov. 8, 1919, in Helena, Montana, to Fred and Blanche (Eldredge) Swingle.
Alene graduated from Lucerne High School in 1937 and married Walter "Bill" Ross in 1938. They were living in San Diego during World War II and she went to work as "Rosie the Riveter," working for Consolidated Aircraft wiring the interior of B-24s. They moved to Indiana where Alene was a homemaker, and was also active with her children's education and involved with the PTA. She assisted Bill with his apartment rental business as well. After Bill passed away, she married Lewis Poe in 1982 and was with him until his passing in 1985; in 1987 she married Donald Wood, who passed away in 1998. She was a member of First Christian Church (formerly Main Street Christian) and very active with them. Alene loved to play bridge and golf, and spent her winters at her home in Florida.
In addition to her parents and husbands, Alene was preceded in death by her brothers, Duane, Roy, Robert, Donald and Lynn Swingle.
She is survived by her three children, Mike Ross, Noel (Rosemary) Ross, and June (Larry) Barton; grandchildren, Joanna, Brian, Jason and Matthew; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.
Family will receive friends Tuesday, Oct. 24 at Sunset Memory Garden Funeral Home, 2097 W. Alto Road, Kokomo, IN 46901, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with services to follow.
